To reach our base from interstate 95, take the Medway exit 244. Left onto Route 157, drive west 10 miles to Millinocket. Katahdin Outfitters is located just outside the Millinocket town line at Hidden Springs Campground on your way to Baxter State Park. A good landmark to use is the Katahdin General Store - we are 9/10 of a mile from it. For those that would like to use their GPS to navigate to us you may enter N 45° 40.535 and W 068° 43.442.

   In order to make your wilderness canoe and camping vacation go as smoothly as possible, here are some helpful hints. Try to arrive at our base with all of your personal equipment packed and ready. For parties going on the West Branch of the Penobscot River, a map can be purchased upon entry into the area.

   For parties traveling to the St. John River and Allagash River systems, we recommend the DeLorme map. These are available at many of the stores in the area or they can be purchased directly from DeLorme Mapping Company, Freeport, Maine, 04032. Please mention Katahdin Outfitters when you call.

   Katahdin Outfitters has no control, or responsibility for road use and camping fees. All fees are paid to the appropriate agency upon entry into these areas.

   One of the decisions that you will have to make is whether you will be using our vehicle as a shuttle.

   The access roads within the area are privately maintained, unsigned, gravel logging roads. In this vast wilderness area there are little or no road services available. These facts taken into consideration over many years and our experience in equipping and maintaining our own transport vehicles, should also be a major consideration if you are planning to use your vehicle as a shuttle. Ask yourself the following questions.

Is the intended shuttle vehicle less that 5 years old or under 50,000 miles?

Can it handle the extra weight safely? (canoes, equipment, passengers, etc.)

Does it have a good spare tire and jack as well as provisions for a second flat? (fix-a-flat, or air compressor and tire repair kit). If a second flat occurs, your vehicle may end up being towed at your expense.

Does it have a range of at least 300 miles?

Are the brakes, steering, suspension and tires free of any known defects?

Is the battery in good condition and securely bolted down?

Be sure to bring a spare set of keys.

Is the vehicle basically free of any known defects?

   If you can answer yes to these questions, your vehicle should be okay as a shuttle. However, we reserve the right to refuse any vehicle. Katahdin Outfitters uses the utmost care when transporting your vehicle.
